Open Source 749 ECM code?

April 30th, 2006

Yes it’s true, the “GROUP” of guys working on the chip have agreed to release all the chip stuff FREE but in exchange we expect calibrations done via it to be treated the same way.
JSM & team have eluded to some new developments being made on the ecm front.

Here are the basics.

Few select group of guys have been working on rewritting the code that runs our ecm. Not just hacks but rewritting, adding things, etc.

We have totally rewritten the fuel formula within the ECM. The old fuel table is no longer valid. So you somewhat gotta start over with fuel calibration.

Some of the things being added or already added.

  • WB brand selection via bit
  • Extended VE table
  • Extended Fuel Multiplier
  • Desired boost -vs- MPH
  • WG DC -vs- MPH
  • Eliminated closed throttle table
  • Eliminated VE adder table

In testing or still to be added

  • Output knock to electric gauge (autometer, etc.)
  • Closed loop wideband (this is a biggie).
  • 2 step staging rpm control
  • full alky control via table
  • and several more ideas I can’t talk about.

So if you can’t tell, this will totally change tuning, how our trucks run, etc. I would say FAST owners will become jealous at the features we are adding.

With due time the chip will be released after more testing but we need a good name.

Anybody got some suggestions on a good name ofr the chip?

March 4th, JSM wrench session!

OLD:
Looking to setup JSM Annual Raceday #2

It is looking like this year will be either March 11th, April 1st (have email into track to confirm dates).

Last year I was limited to 10 cars/trucks. I am going to look into seeing how much the additional expense is this year to go for more than 10.

If I am limited to 10, then I will be forced to limit # of people.

At 10 people the track will cost $65 per person (assuming they keep the same price this year, which I have NOT confirmed). As those that went know this was 7hours or racing, and the track was OURS all the way to running the lights. Very layed back format. Last year it was the super sticky, in fact Hardman’s pants almost stuck to it and fell down several times.

I would really like to get 20 or so trucks going. In order to do this I need solid “I will go and pay ahead of time” from people. Just so everybody knows, I make ZERO on this event. Last year I even bought food for everybody and payed the pizza driver extra to race.

PEP, Tampa FL - Vendor Issues

January 14th, 2006

Dear Ivanko,

In searching the Internet for information about PEP in Tampa, Florida, I came across your series of problems with them.

I currently have my own major problem with this company and Dennis Abbey. My company hired them to build us a chassis for an agreed-upon price, including all design and engineering. The project is only 50% completed and I just received a bill for an additional $72,000 to complete the project, and they are holding my jigs and fixtures hostage. I am searching for an attorney in the area, and thought you might have possibly used one. Mr. Abbey does not answer my phone calls either.

Any help you could give would be much appreciated. These guys are scum. Thank you.

Monthly Maintenance

January 1st, 2006
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2006!
Here are a few tips to keep your truck running in tip-top shape this new year!

    • Check tire pressure and look for signs of uneven wear or embedded objects that can cause air leaks. In winter, check tire pressure whenever there is a sharp change in temperature. Look for cracks in rubber.
    • Check around the truck and under the engine for fluid leaks. You can often identify the type of fluid that is leaking by its colour. Oil is black, coolant is a bright greenish yellow, automatic transmission fluid is pink, and power steering and brake fluids are clear, with a slight brown tinge. All of these fluids are oily to the touch.
    • Check fluid levels, including engine oil, engine coolant level, transmission fluid and power steering fluid, according to the instructions in the owner’s manual.
    • Check under the hood for cracked or split spark plug wires, cracked radiator hoses or loose clamps and corrosion around the battery terminals. Vacuum lines need to be zip-tied so the boost doesnt blow them off.
    • Check for problems with the brakes. On a straight, flat and traffic-free stretch of road, rest your hands lightly on the steering wheel and apply the brakes gradually. If the vehicle swerves to one side, one of the brake linings may be worn more than the other, or the brakes may need adjustment.
    • Use a similar test to check for problems with wheel alignment. On a straight, flat and traffic-free stretch of road, rest your hands lightly on the steering wheel and drive at an even speed. If the vehicle pulls to one side, the wheels may be misaligned.

Synthetic oils also offer an advantage over mineral oils, particularly under extreme weather or performance conditions. Synthetic motor oil is manufactured, rather than refined from crude oil, which means it can be specially formulated to have extremely good flow characteristics and resistance to viscosity breakdown. However, keep in mind that synthetic oil is more expensive than conventional motor oil.

The cooling system will perform properly only if it receives regular maintenance. This includes monitoring the coolant level in the overflow tank, regularly inspecting hoses for cracks or loose clamps, and adjusting belts, where applicable (most new vehicles have self-tensioning belts). Coolant degrades over time, and it’s important to change it as specified by the manufacturer. Antifreeze concentration should also be tested every fall so that the engine will be adequately protected for the winter. Do not use pink antifreeze it does not woork well in out setup. Best thing to do is use regular old green with water wetter. Use a water heavy mix in intercooler system.

Regular maintenance of your vehicle’s ignition system is critical in maximizing fuel efficiency. The spark plugs in a gasoline engine ignite the air-fuel mixture. If one or more of the plugs is worn or malfunctioning, the engine will misfire, and some fuel will remain unburned. This can casue your truck to show knock in datamaster. Worn or damaged spark plug wires can also cause misfiring. A misfiring engine wastes fuel, produces higher levels of emissions and generally performs poorly. Clean contacts under the cap if not replacing cap and rotor.

Maintenance, Part 1: Waxing

December 30th, 2005

Regular waxing will keep your Sy/Ty looking new for many years. A truck that has been waxed twice a year will probably have a better shine then when it was new. It will also command a higher resale value and be easier to sell.

If rain water does not bead on the painted surfaces of your truck, it’s time to wax it. How often you have to wax your truck is dependent on the type of wax you use and how good you want your truck to look. Some of the new synthetic waxes will last more than a year. One of my favorites is Meguiars, you get that nice glass / wet look.

Obviously, there are two ways to get your truck waxed: have it done by someone or do it yourself. If you don’t mind spending about $100.00, check out an auto detailer. They will clean the entire truck inside and out, cleaning and waxing the body and shampooing the interior, right down to using a toothbrush to clean the seams in the dashboard. They will deep-clean the wheels and tires and make sure they remove any wax residue around the nameplates and emblems. Check with your local car wash or look in the Yellow Pages under “Automobile Detailing”.

If you decide to wax the truck yourself, make sure you start with a clean truck and never work in direct sunlight on a hot day. Before you start, run your hand over the surface, it should feel smooth like glass. If it feels rough or gritty like there are bits of sand embedded in the paint, then you should first use a non-abrasive cleaner to clean the paint before waxing. One of the best methods that I have found uses clay to smooth the surface. Products such as Clay Magic & Meguiars Clay Detailer work beautifully with amazing results. Make sure you only use products designed for automotive finishes and follow the instructions on the container. After you finish waxing the truck, you should go over the entire surface to look for wax residue, especially around trim and body seems. A tooth brush or Q-tips work well for this.

If your truck has black trim, try to keep the wax away from it. Some waxes may leave a chalky film on dull black trim, such as rubber and some plastics, that can be hard to remove. Look for products that are made for cleaning black trim. I found them to work well and really let the black stand out. Black Chrome from Turtle Wax works great at keeping your cladding fresh and new looking.

Before beginning the job, examine the paint closely for chips and scratches and touch them up. Touch-up paint is available at most auto supply stores for the most popular paint colors. If you can’t find your color there, check with your new truck dealer. If they don’t have it you may have to go to an auto body supply where they can match any color you might have (for a price). That tube will usually last a few years if you only use it for chips and small scratches and keep it covered. Make sure that you wipe the paint off the bottle before you put the lid back on or you will never get it off again. (I speak from experience)

Marty is working his but off on his SGT. It’s sure to impress the ladies!

Make sure to see the rest of this projects progress in Marty’s gallery over on sportmachines.

Marty’s build:

I would like to say a big thank you to Guy @ Rockford Racecraft for helping me with my new turbo Selection. He took the time to contact Precision and spend an hour on the phone explaining to them my new revised build (project excess - daily driver). We were convinced that the original turbo selection may have blown a hole in the bottom of the block. The new turbo is a GTQ 32, 51 trim, 58 tangenal exhaust housing. I hope to have the fram back from the chassis shop in two weeks and mount the cab and install the motor back in the truck so they can get started on the downpipes and exhaust. Should be very interesting the next couple weeks. It may actually look like something for a change instead of boxes and boxes of parts.

Once again thank you Guy.

Car PC Hacks

December 28th, 2005

I have always wanted to put a mini pc system in my truck to run Datamaster, RT Tuner and maybe even Windows Media player with a couple gigs of music all interlinked running through the stereo. Wireless capabilities are a plus too so my passengers can check e-mail/News on go.

Anyway, I’m sure most of you know of books.google.com. If not then listen up. It’s a massive database full of scanned books for your reading pleasure. There are millions of books there free for public use. You cant find a bigger library than what Google is offering. So I was searching around and found a great book on Car PC Hacks. Check it out.
